The Promise

They reached the parking lot next to the apartment building. Jim got out of his truck and walked over to Blair's car. "We'll put most of this stuff in storage in the basement of the building. Just bring up what you'll need."

Jim walked back over to his truck to start unloading what they had been able to salvage in a short time after the explosion.

Blair got out of his car and grabbed Larry's cage and his backpack. He stood there, unsure of what to do. He finally followed Jim, while Larry chattered happily in his cage. As they walked into the building, Jim turned and handed Blair his keys.

"Take Larry on up to the loft and then you can help me with the rest of this stuff. Oh, and keep Larry in the cage."

"Sure, Jim." Blair walked over to the elevator, seeing the 'Out of Order' sign there. Blair sighed and started up the stairs. It was a long trip up the three flights of stairs, especially after all Blair had been through that night already. At the second floor landing, Larry's chattering got a little louder.

"Sh-h-h, Larry. We have to be on our best behavior here. Jim is being very generous offering both of us a place to stay. He didn't have to do that."

Blair made it up to the third floor and down the hall to #307. He unlocked the door and walked inside. He placed Larry's cage on the kitchen table and placed his backpack on one of the chairs there. He checked the latch on the cage, making sure it was closed securely.

"Try to get some rest, Larry. I'll be back shortly."

Blair left the loft, locking the door behind him. He went back downstairs to join Jim to bring in the rest of his things. When they finished the last of it and they were walking up the stairs with a couple of suitcases, Blair spoke.

"I… uh… want to thank you for this, Jim. You didn't have to."

"Sure I did, Sandburg. I couldn't leave Larry to fend for himself. He's a helpless primate."

"I want you to know I'm grateful for this."

"Just remember your promise, Chief," said Jim as he unlocked the door to the loft, hearing Larry chattering away.
