The Amazing Blair Sandburg

Jim was positively amazed Blair was still going strong after 24 hours. He had never seen anyone able to be so alert and functional after 24 straight hours. He had tried to get Blair to take a nap earlier in preparation for the overnight stakeout, but Blair had told Jim he didn't need a nap. He had pulled long hours consistently over the years he had been at Rainier. He could continue to do it.

"But you're not as young as you used to be, Chief." Jim had tried to reason with the younger man.

"Neither are you, Ellison. Maybe you better get your beauty sleep now, so you won't fall asleep in the truck later."

"Hilarious, Sandburg. I'll have you know I've pulled long hours also, especially when I was in Vice."

"Oh yeah, but then you had prostitutes and cross-dressers to keep you occupied."

"Let's just go out on the stakeout and keep your remarks to yourself."

They went out on the stakeout. Blair kept Jim awake and entertained most of the time by telling stories about his students that semester and the way they tried to get out of doing work for his classes. Jim did have to admit it was entertaining.

Four hours into the stakeout, the criminal showed up and he was arrested without incident, for which everyone was grateful. Jim turned the guy over to the uniforms and stayed until the scene was processed. Then he and Blair went to the station to do the paperwork in order to get it done right away. Jim leaned against the back of the elevator on the ride up to Major Crime. Blair was practically bouncing by his side.

"How come you're so energetic, Chief?"

"I told you, Jim. I'm used to doing this. If you want me to write up the reports for you, I can."

"No, Sandburg! I can do my own reports."

"But they might actually make sense if you let me do it. You can get us both some coffee from the break room."

Jim thought it over. It was a tempting offer. "Okay, Sandburg. You can do the reports. Just don't make them too good or Simon will know you did them."

"Simon knows I do the majority of your reports anyway."

"Yeah, I guess he does."

Blair finished the reports in record time, getting Jim to sign off on them after he read them over. As they left the bullpen of Major Crime, Jim tossed Blair the keys to the truck.

"What's this, Jim?"

"I'm going to take a quick nap on the ride home. Just don't crash the truck."

Blair smiled. "You got it, Jim."
