His Smile

He looks over at me. Even though there are dozens of people in between us, I focus on him. On his smile. It lights up a room and always brings a smile to my face. When he smiles, it means he's content, happy and not stressed out over the stimuli that assault him every day.

Even though I'm his guide, I can't protect him from everything and I can't be with him 24/7. So, with my help and aid, he's learned to live with everyday things that you and I would take for granted, that for a sentinel become an irritant or a distraction.

When he flashes that smile, it means he's coping at peak performance and all is well with the world. I only wish I could focus on him the way he can focus on me. By giving me the smile, he's allowing me to know that he's fine. I worry about him as much as he worries about me. It's a two-way street, the friendship we've developed over the years. We watch each other's back and take care of one another. When both of us are in peak form, then the world runs a little smoother and we can relax. Of course, with us, that rarely happens. But we're getting better at it.

He is focused on me now as he makes his way through the crowds over to where I'm talking to several professors. Well, they're talking and I'm half-listening, half watching my partner across the way. He had gotten waylaid by the Chancellor, no doubt recognizing who he was and hitting him up for a donation to the university. I see he's gotten away from her and he's on his way over to me.

I make my exit from the professors and meet Jim halfway. He takes my arm, moving me over to the buffet table.

"Have you had anything to eat yet with that champagne you've been drinking?"

"Yes, dad. I know better than to drink without eating anything. And you know I've ate something, you've been watching me the whole evening." But we still go over to the buffet table to get more food.

"I liked the speech, doctor."

I smile at the emphasis he put on 'doctor'. He's proud of me, as proud as a parent or older brother would be. I'm proud of myself, truth be told. I'm one of the youngest PhD's in the field of anthropology. Heck, one of the youngest in any field of study.

Now, I give lectures and head up expeditions around the world, while Jim continues as Cascade's top detective. And when I'm not on expeditions or giving lectures, I'm able to help Jim out at the PD. The best of both worlds and we wouldn't chance a thing. We might do a couple things differently, but all the experiences we've had have helped us grow and be stronger together.

Jim?, You mean that
