Blair sat in his office, trying to find something normal and familiar in his life. Ever since drowning in the fountain, nothing had been the same. He didn’t know what to expect, but it sure wasn’t that everyone would whisper around him, like they needed to keep a secret from him. It wasn’t just the students, faculty and employees of Rainier, though. When he finally showed up at the police department, there were those there that did the same thing. Blair didn’t understand it.

Of course, it didn’t help any that he and Jim were practically strangers these days. Whenever Blair tried to talk to Jim about what happened, either at the fountain, or later with Alex in Mexico, Jim would either walk away or change the subject. Blair understood that Jim probably felt some guilt over what happened, even though he didn’t have direct input into it. His actions around Alex were a little overt and Blair still didn’t understand that completely. But it wasn’t like Jim was going to discuss that if he wouldn’t talk to Blair about his brush with death.

‘Brush with death’. It was a curious phrase. And not accurate at all in Blair’s case. It wasn’t a brush at all. Blair had died, was dead for some time, the exact amount disputed by the paramedics and the doctors. The truth was that Jim brought Blair back from the dead. Blair had a hard time accepting that fact, although he understood that it meant he and Jim were connected on another level. Blair just wanted an opportunity to discuss it with Jim. However, he understood Jim’s reluctance to take that step into something that was unknown.

The door opened to his office and Blair looked up, seeing Jim standing there. There was a look on the older man’s face that Blair couldn’t quite read.

“Jim! What are you doing here?”

“I was wondering if we could talk, Chief. I think I’m ready to take that trip with you.”
