What Was Almost Lost

Jim had to admit it was his one guilty pleasure in life – his love for Blair. And to think that it almost hadn’t happened. Jim was just glad things had worked out in their favor.

Blair had decided to leave after the dissertation fiasco, not seeing any way to stay and have people take him seriously. He had already turned down the offer of being Jim’s official partner and even thought Jim was likely to tell him to leave. Blair wanted to cut his ties to Cascade before anyone told him to leave.

Jim found Blair at the loft, starting to pack away his artifacts and all the other things he had added to the loft over the years to make it a home. When Jim saw Blair there, something clicked in his mind. He knew he couldn’t let Blair leave. He also knew he had to let Blair know that he loved him.

Blair looked over at Jim and a realization hit him – he was in love with Jim. He wondered if he should say something or just leave without a word. Jim took the decision away from him when he spoke first.

“I don’t want you to leave, Blair. I love you. I know that you probably don’t feel the same way, but…”

“I love you too, Jim. Why did you wait so long to say anything?”

“I was afraid you didn’t feel the same. You love me, too?”

“Of course I do, you goof! I’m surprised you didn’t know it before now. There were times when I thought it was rather obvious.”

“Does that mean that you’re going to stay?”

“What will I do? I’ve seemed to have burned all my bridges.”

“We can make this right. We do another press conference.”

“No, Jim. I won’t let you admit to having heightened senses. If it came out it was true, then all types of people would be gunning for you, both criminals and government personnel. I don’t want you under that type of scrutiny.”

“You didn’t let me finish, Blair. We can admit that I have two or three heightened senses, not all five. You can say that you exaggerated your research and paper in an attempt to gain fame.”

“Gee, Jim, how is that any different than what I’ve already admitted to in my press conference?”

“Well, for one thing, it doesn’t make you a fraud, at least not a total fraud. It gives some credence to your research and all of your hard work. After the press conference, then we’ll take on Sid Graham and that publishing company for invading our privacy and publishing your work when you specifically said no. There are audio tapes that will back up that claim. Once they realize that, then I’m sure they be ready to reach a settlement. Then, we can take on the university.”

Blair walked over to Jim and placed his hand over Jim’s mouth. “Stop, Jim. I understand what you’re trying to do and I love you for it.”

Jim reached up, removing Blair’s hand from his mouth and then kissing Blair’s palm. He then leaned forward and kissed Blair on the lips. Blair put his arms around Jim and participated in the kiss.

It took several months, but eventually the novelty of the press conference died down. During those months, Jim and Blair discussed the past and the future, both of them deciding that it was best to understand each other, especially if they wanted their relationship to survive and thrive.

Jim smiled with the memory of those days and how much both of them had admitted to each other during their talks. Jim was truthful with Blair, expressing things he never thought he could to anyone.

Their love for each other had a lot to do with their success and their honesty. It made it so much easier to tackle things together rather than apart. Jim knew they could survive anything.

Jim was able to get Blair to reconsider the offer to become his official partner and Blair jumped at the chance to prove himself all over again in another arena. He continued to submit Jim to various tests on his heightened senses, just to keep him on his toes. The official line with the public was that Jim had heighted sight and hearing. It made sense to make it that way and no one questioned it too much.
