Congratulations, Partner

Jim couldn't keep the smile off his face as his friend, and guide, was announced to the crowd. Soon, Blair would be his partner, too. It was the culmination of Jim's hopes, dreams and wishes over the years. He always wanted Blair as his official partner, but never wanted to influence him one way or another.

After the dissertation fiasco, Jim was sure Blair would want to prove himself and return to Rainier to get his doctorate. While Blair did express an interest to get his doctorate at some point in his life, it wasn't the all-consuming goal it had been when he had been actively pursuing the degree. With his degree aspirations on the back burner, Blair was looking for something else as his focus. Jim hoped it would be the offer by Simon and the police department for Blair to become Jim's official and permanent partner. Even after the way Jim had treated him.

For a while, it bordered on going to the academy and running away from Cascade to find employment somewhere else. Jim wasn't sure what Blair was going to do. It didn't help any that Blair wasn't talking to Jim, either. Blair had left the loft, not coming home for several days.

When he did return, he gave Jim his answer. He would go to the academy, but there needed to be another press conference given, to explain further about the sentinel stuff. Jim agreed to the press conference and the two of them worked together to do damage control, admitting that Jim did have two heightened senses, hearing and sight. Blair had embellished the rest of the story, giving Jim all five heightened senses, thinking that was way more interesting than just two. The press seemed to buy it and Blair's credibility was somewhat repaired with Rainier and the people of Cascade.

Now, Blair was graduating first in his class at the academy, acing his classes, including self-defense and firearms, with aid from Jim. Jim was proud of his partner to be, and happy that Blair had chose to stay.

Jim found Blair easily after graduation and walked up behind him, squeezing his shoulders. He whispered in Blair's ear. "Congratulations, partner."
