A New Adventure
Debbie

Blair boarded the bus, found his seat and then looked out the window where his mother was standing, still watching. She waved when she saw him and he waved back. He blew her a few kisses before the bus took off. This was Blair's latest adventure and his most important. He was headed to Cascade, Washington and Rainier University, where he had been accepted as a sixteen year old.

Along with the excitement he felt, Blair was also scared. It was the first time in his life that he and his mom would be separated for a long period. There had been short separations over the years, but Blair would be by himself at Rainier. It had been arranged for several contacts, mostly professors at the university, so Blair would have someone to talk to and to relate any problems to when he arrived. This was the first step on his road to his career as an anthropologist. Just thinking that brought a smile to Blair's face.

It would be hard work, but Blair had never shied away from studying, reading, research and writing. And the fact that he would be younger than most of the others didn't bother him either. He had always been younger, smaller and smarter than most of his so-called peers. He never flaunted that fact over the years though. In fact, he usually went out of his way to help others learn and understand concepts they had trouble grasping. That was one of the reasons he wanted to teach some day, it seemed like a natural act for him. He was always explaining something to someone.

It was going to take several hours on the bus before he arrived in Cascade. He had read up in advance about the beautiful scenery of the mountains and the surrounding area had to offer. He was looking forward to exploring the area and getting to know people, both at the university and in the city. After all, if all went as planned, he was going to be there for several years. He wanted to advance his studies and hoped to attain his doctorate at a future date. He was sure all would go as planned.

He tried to relax on the bus, but his mind was conjuring up images of how it was going to be in college at such a young age. He had decided some time ago to act as if he knew what he was doing so that he wouldn't look like a dork. The last thing he wanted to do was to disappoint either his fellow students or the professors. The university had invested a lot in allowing him to come there, including giving him a scholarship to help with the cost.

The bus jerked to a stop and Blair woke up. He had been asleep for about an hour. He saw he had arrived in Cascade. He grabbed his backpack and got off the bus, getting his duffel bag and two suitcases he had. He looked around. A man walked towards him.

"Professor Buckner?" Blair extended out his hand.

The man shook his hand. "You must be Blair Sandburg. You look younger than sixteen, my boy. I'm Professor Hal Buckner. The university deemed that I should be your faculty advisor. I understand that you want to study anthropology?"

"Yeah. I've been reading books about it since I was about six. I love the concept of exploring other cultures and people and getting to know their histories and customs and rituals." Blair knew he was babbling, but Professor Buckner didn't seem to mind.

"Well, at least you're not shy, Blair. That's an admirable trait for someone so young. If you don't speak up, you'll be left behind. Let's get you to the university and I'll give you the grand tour and show you where you'll be staying."

Blair grabbed up his things and followed Professor Buckner to his car. He was still a little scared, but he felt things were going to be okay.

I can't imagine how frightened he must have been. So young to be all alone with coping with college. Great story, hon. Thanks.
