A Budding Star

Blair was excited. He had been picked to be the narrator of the annual school play. He was the youngest student ever to be picked to narrate. He was only six years old, but his reading and comprehension skills were that of a ten year old.

Blair ran home to tell his mom of his accomplishment. As he came inside the small house, he saw his mom in the kitchen, getting his after-school snack ready.

"Mom! Mom! Guess what they're going to let me do?" Blair was practically jumping up and down.

"Calm down, Blair! Go wash your hands and then you can have your peanut butter sandwich. And you can tell me your news."

Blair dropped his backpack on the floor of the kitchen and went to the bathroom to wash up. He would have to look over the script Mrs. Tolliver had given him earlier after he had been chosen to be narrator. He knew they were doing Peter and the Wolf, but wasn't sure what all he had to do or how much his part entailed.

Blair came back out to the kitchen and sat down at the table. Naomi brought over his sandwich and a glass of milk. She sat down at the table beside him. He started eating his sandwich and drinking his milk. He paused after half of it was gone.

"I get to be the narrator for the school play! They're doing Peter and the Wolf. I have the script Mrs. Tolliver gave me. Can you come to the play, mom?"

"Well, I think I will be able to come. Especially if my son is the narrator!" Naomi reached over, gently ruffling Blair's perpetually unruly curls. "Are you sure you can handle such an awesome responsibility?"

Blair nodded his head yes, as he was finishing his peanut butter sandwich.

Naomi smiled at her son, excited that Blair loved school and learning.

I really like writing Blair as a kid. I think he'd be much the same as when he got older.
